The first stage :
the hull lattice.
This is the interface between hull geometry and calculation code allowing optimisation work for overall performance. Despite today’s availability of high-performance software this stage remains long: producing the lattice for an Americas’ Class unit and all its appendages involves from 2 to 4 million cells and necessitates several days’ work.

ICARE calculations.
The valuable function specific to the ICARE code is its recognition of the free surface, allowing the designer access to the following parameters:

Total resistance and its decomposition (wave / friction) for each element (hull and appendages)

Hull draft and dynamic trim; factors built into the code with a major influence on flow resistances

Local flow patterns requiring careful examination and analysis, especially the zones around the bulb and its winglets

Element-by-element resistance decomposition: an essential parameter allowing the optimisation of extrapolation methods applied to model tank-testing performances.
