Adrien
World record bettered by 29 days! Adrien is
a slender, hyper-performance, 26m monohull optimised for
sustained upwind conditions, built in light-alloy at the
Gamelan boatyard in 2002. On 11th March 2004 she passed the
finishing line at Sables d’Olonne after 122 days, 14
hours, 3 minutes and 49 seconds single-handed sailing.
After a fine-tuning period, Jean-Luc Van
Den Heede had made his assault on the round the world
against-the-wind record and took it at the fourth attempt.
Philippe Monnet, the previous holder of the precious record,
had a few years previously taken 151 days, 19 hours. Not
resting on his laurels, a few months later VDH set up a new
record time of 12h-1min-31sec for a solo Channel crossing from
Cowes to Dinard.
Although optimised for against-the-wind
sailing,
Adrien can also perform well in downwind
conditions !
